I was also experiencing the same error when attempting to open a .doc file with Word from Office Professional 2003. However, you will not be able to open these files in WordPad anymore. I found the "How-to-fix" this on the internet by going into the registry and went over there but it didn't work.
Simply delete the .doc and add .pdf at the end.
