It's fine on the other server using the same proxies and accounts. Apparently this doesn't make any difference. I allowed these to pass and WSUS began synchronizing again. What actually could be the reason for this ?

In my case anonymous access is forbidden by company policy. What can possibly be causing WSUS (or BITS) to think the downloads are problematic ? (BITS just immediately cancels the downloads without actually doing anything.) I'm guessing the real problem is If this does not fix the problem then also check permissions to the WSUSInstallDirectory.
