I wrote a mms url protocol in file assoc with wmp as the player and it still comes up with the same message that it cant play mms. You have to be careful when downloading codec packs because some of them contain malware, viruses, etc and will ruin your system. This was the only thing I found that works--I tried everything else suggested on the page, multiple times uninstalling/reinstalling codecs and different players and versions, none of those worked.

not all videos use codecs, just those that are compressed. I've had corrupted mp4 files that Vlc player will play, whereas other apps just won't. After that now all of my wmp based internet vids play. Click on "Tools" and a drop-down menu will appear – click on “options” and a popup window will appear with a number of tabs.
